Please Read First...

There a couple minor issues I need to address before we go any further (as can be expected in a project of this magnitude).

Recently, I was asked by a customer about the audio quality of Webisodes 3&4 (DVD #2). To the best of my knowledge, this is the first and only customer to approach me with this issue since mid-2014, when Bluegrass Guitar Essentials first became available for purchase in webisode format.

When I originally recorded this particular video (many of the webisodes are contained in one video), I recorded it with my camcorder plugged into the charger. Bad idea. Little did I know, it picked up the electric current from the wall, which resulted in a hum for the entire video.

When I hired my video editor, I asked him to clean up the audio; he did the best he could. In Webs 3&4 and DVD #2, there's a slight distortion of the audio; however, this does not affect the overall learning experience nor take away from the information in this section of the course.

The good news: Webs 3&4 is the only video which is affected in this manner. I realized the issue early and corrected it immediately, making sure my battery was fully charged before recording any further videos.

More good news: it's an easy fix for better audio quality. Just adjust the EQ settings on your preferred viewing device (TV, surround-sound, computer, etc.) until the audio suits you.

The best news: I've recently found the original video and was able to tweak some EQ settings on my own. Though it didn't clean the audio up entirely, it's still an improvement over the audio included in the actual webisode video. (Right click link/audio player and choose "Save As...")

Note: This is from the original, unedited video, so the audio won't line up exactly with the webisode. It's just for reference in case there are some places in the video you can't quite make out.

When proofing the files for DVD #5 (the same as Webs 9&10: "Songs, Fiddle Tunes, & Rhythm"), I noticed the aspect ratio (the relationship between a video's width and height, commonly seen as two numbers separated by a colon) of this video wasn't entirely full-screen—though, again, not affecting the learning quality; but not what I expected.

I asked my DVD guy about it, and he said that for some reason the raw .mp4 video file of this particular video wasn't compatible with DVD format and therefore had to convert it, which resulted in a lower aspect ratio.

Another easy fix: Just adjust the aspect ratio for DVD #5 on your preferred viewing device (dvd player, computer, game console, etc.) and set it to your preferences.

Also, this only applies to DVD #5 and not the corresponding webisodes (9&10), which have the correct aspect ratio.

I tell you these things so you will know in advance what to expect when you order Bluegrass Guitar Essentials via either Webisodes or on DVD.
